Trying to decide what Chess Club Group to register your child in? The below should help!

Check with them from the list below what they know, what they use when playing and what they feel they totally master.

  • Register them in Group 1 - Novice, if all they know is

    Chess is a game they might enjoy.

  • Register them in Group 2 - Beginner, if they master

    * What is listed in previous Group levels PLUS:

    * The board

    * Moves of the pieces

    * Attacking and capturing

    * The pawn

    * Defending of a piece

    * Check and getting out of check

    * Checkmate

    * Castling

    * Mate in one

    * Capturing unprotective piece

  • Register them in Group 3 - Competent, if they master:

    * What is listed in previous Group levels PLUS:

    * The notation of recording moves

    * Stalemate

    * Hanging pieces

    * King and Queen checkmate

    * Roller checkmate (with 2 rooks)

    * Profitable exchange

    * Twofold attack

    * Double Attack

    * Delivering mate (mate in one with a double check, threatening mate)

    * Exchange and profitable exchange  

    * The pin

    * The Fork

    * Discovered attack

  • Register them in Group 4 - Proficient 1

    This differs with Group 5 on the Essential Skills we focus on. Here we will focus on Perfectionnism and Self-Confidence.

    In terms of chess they should have master everything listed in previous Group levels and have a throrough understanding of most of the below:

    * Activity of pieces

    * The opening

    * Targets of attack

    * Double attack: queen

    * Defending against mate

    * Hanging pieces

    * The advantage of a passed pawn

    * Deflection

    * Different chess openings

    * Attacking the F2/F7 pawns

    * Draw by stalemate

    * Forcing stalemate and avoiding stalemate 

    * How to play pawn endings

    * Exchange sacrifice

    * Removing the Guard

    * Forced checkmate

  • Register them in Group 5 - Proficient 2

    This differs with Group 4 on the Essential Skills we focus on. Here we will focus on Social Skills and Emotional Self-Regulation.

    In terms of chess they should have master everything listed in previous Group levels and have a throrough understanding of most of the below:

    * Activity of pieces

    * The opening

    * Targets of attack

    * Double attack: queen

    * Defending against mate

    * Hanging pieces

    * The advantage of a passed pawn
