Chess Club - Group 1 - Novice

4. Building Skills in Partnership with Skills Builder

These sessions, like all of our sessions, are created to enable your child to develop essential skills throughout the course.

Our chess clubs are set up to encourage the use and development of the following skills:

Primary Skills Learned

  • Staying positive is one of the primary skills that chess teaches us. Indeed, one must be prepared to lose and, more importantly, learn to recover from these losses and use them as learning opportunities. Furthermore, the children will be taught sportsmanship and the importance of being respectful of others in all situations during the classes and the tournament settings.

  • Aiming high in terms of learning and putting into practice their skills to win. Chess is a sport and a competitive one at that. We will be encouraging the children to work to the best of their knowledge, understanding and ability to reach the best they can reach at any point in their learning journey. At times this may involve playing against stronger opponents, overcoming challenges or simply taking a chance in answering questions and trying to solve puzzles during the session.

Secondary Skills Learned

On top of the above essential skills these workshops will enable your child to build self-confidence in working and interacting online. A habit and comfort some of us have found more difficult to deal with than others, but that looks likely to be needed in the long term.

1. Workshop Description

This workshop series group is for players who have no knowledge of chess.

Children will be taught the basics of chess and how to checkmate their opponents before moving onto exploring basic tactics.
They will then move onto to playing mini tournaments of speed chess against one another at the end of each session.

If you want to check if this is the right Group based on your child’s knowledge of chess, please check our summary of knowledge required per group here.

The sessions will comprise of a lesson part, solving chess puzzles and, after a few sessions, the last part of the session will be dedicated to playing speed chess tournaments against one another.

We will be discussing with you the young players' progress both in chess and skills development.

Recommended Age

More than age, we ask that the participants for this course are comfortable working and interacting online.

Important Notes

  • In order to offer the best possible experience for the children we are limiting the course to a minimum 4 and maximum 12 particpants per course. Please book promptly to avoid being disappointed either by missing out on the last spaces or due to the course having to be cancelled for a term due to a lack of registrations.

  • We understand that our courses are not as cheap as “regular” chess clubs. This is because our primary focus is to work on your child’s Essential Skills development which requires time in and outside of the sessions. There are however charities such as the Potential Trust that you may contact to ask for financial support in joining our Club.

  • The well-being and safety of our children is paramount, we thus follow safeguarding procedures and ensure our tutors are DBS checked.
